MARKET REPORT
Fruit
At last the cost of South African grapes has started to go in a downwards direction, good news and quality is superb. Remember that Clementine and Satsuma supplies start to dwindle away now; Minneola’s and ortaniques will become available to fill the gap. It’s worth bearing in mind that at this time of year melons are short and this leads to the inevitable rise in price. With Valentines Day just around the corner, make a note that Strawberries, Raspberries, blueberries, together with blackberries and redcurrant are all still available and quality remains good.
Vegetables
Watch out for the increase in cost of courgettes and aubergine, supplies of both have tightened up. On the plus side we are able to offer top quality tender stem and purple sprouting broccoli, well worth considering, please remember that to make sure they arrive with you as fresh as possible you will need to order in advance as we do not carry stock. Cyprus Potatoes are now available and have a taste all of their own. Jerusalem Artichokes are now at their best with a great flavour and a good price, combinations like this we like! Curly Kale is another winter crop vegetable which is often overlooked and is worth considering.
Salad
The Canary Tomato seasons is now in full swing and are bursting with flavour, these together with an amazing selection of ‘leaf’ and micro herbs means that winter salads are just as good as in the middle of summer. Iceberg lettuce and peppers have both seen a price rise over the last two weeks and dwindling supplies will mean that the price will remain firm.
